Overview

The Online Mapping Application is an internal tool designed to visually display a community's plans to mitigate the effects of potential hazards. This interactive map includes multiple layers that users can control to access specific information, allowing for comprehensive disaster preparedness. Developed for widespread use, this tool provides communities with critical updates on planning efforts, enabling informed decision-making, proactive risk reduction, and enhanced community resilience.

Challenge

Due to the vast amount of data within the map, displaying all relevant information simultaneously posed a significant challenge. Many users were unaware of the tool’s full capabilities, leading to infrequent use and missed opportunities for effective planning. To address this issue, we conducted in-depth research to evaluate the map's usability and identify areas for improvement. Additionally, we collaborated closely with product owners through working sessions to develop a more functional and accessible map interface.

Solution

Leveraging insights from Experience Builder research, we designed an intuitive and user-friendly map interface that enhances accessibility and comprehension. Users can now effortlessly sort map views based on both current and future conditions, making it easier to analyze and plan for potential hazards. A clear legend and an interactive layer list were incorporated to provide additional context, ensuring that users can quickly interpret the data. Furthermore, a tutorial popup was introduced to guide users through the different data categories, improving overall usability. These enhancements collectively empower users with a deeper understanding of potential risks, particularly in flood-prone areas, and enable better decision-making for community safety.
